Protecting Yourself When Driving Around Semi Trucks

Semi Trucks can be very dangerous they are by comparison the largest vehicles on the road and as such can cause more damage if involved in a crash. We’ll go over a few tips you can keep in mind when driving on the road with 18 wheelers.

  • • 18 wheelers need more room to stop – This is even more so when they have a full load as the distance required to stop increases, to offset the weight of the load their carrying. So being mindful of the fact that a truck takes more time to stop, don’t slam on your brakes as often in front of a truck as you may have not given them enough space to stop.

    • Truckers blind spots are larger - The blind spot on a car or SUV is significantly shorter than a truck think about it your able to look over your shoulder and see if anyone is in your blind spot. For a truck that’s much harder because when they look over their shoulder there’s a large container there that prevents them from seeing what’s on the side of them. Usually you’ll notice smaller mirrors on the primary mirrors and these serve the purpose of eliminating a blind spot for truckers.

  • • A truck needs more room to turn – truckers often have to turn their trucks wide left to make a right turn and if a car happens to turn in that extra area that a truck need stop turn that driver could potentially cause a serious accident or even have a medical malpractice suit brought against them or the truck company.

  • Some other factors to take into considerations is that truck drivers are on the road for 14-16 hours at a time, so extreme fatigue is a commonplace problem that truck drivers have to endure, in a race to deliver the goods in a timely manner.

So next time while out on the road respect the truck drivers, because now you know what it takes to be a truck driver and challenges they face.
